Salvatore Capezio, born in 1871 in Muro Lucano, Italy, chose a different path than his father, who was a construction engineer. He became an artist in his own right, specializing in shoemaking. At the age of 17, in 1887, he opened his shop on Broadway and 39th Street in New York City, right across from the old Metropolitan Opera House.
